The BEST Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes Recipe

I have a love that runs deep for potatoes and I'm not ashamed to admit it. There are so many tasty varieties and ways to enjoy this versatile vegetable. I would like to share with you one of my most favorite recipes for Scalloped Potatoes.



I love that the ingredients are simple and even though this recipe takes just over an hour to complete, it is so worth it in the end. Definitely set aside time to prepare the potatoes. I purchased this slicer below, which comes with many attachments and I'm very happy with it.

This device saves a lot of time and double that in effort in order to get them sliced just right. I usually cut them at a "2" setting on this, which is the middle setting for thickness.


You will find the recipe below and let me know what you think. You can accompany with recipe with cooked ham or bacon to make a meal out of it. Alternatively, with smaller portions you can have this be 1 out of 2 sides, the other side being a green vegetable of your choosing and a hearty meat like steak or chicken. I made mine with leftover ham and it was so good!

The BEST Cheesy Scalloped Potatoes


1/4 cup. Onion, chopped

2 Tbsp. Unsalted Butter

2 Tbsp. Flour

1-1/4 cup. Milk

1/4 tsp. Salt

1/2 tsp. Pepper

1/2 tsp. Nutmeg

3 Medium Potatoes, peeled a sliced thin (3 cups)

1 cup. Shredded Cheddar Cheese

1 tsp. Chives, for Garnish


  1. Preheat oven to 350 F.

  2. In a sauce pan on medium heat: melt butter, cook onion until tender.

  3. Stir in flour and salt.

  4. Add milk.

  5. Cook and stir until thickened and bubbly.

  6. Add pepper and nutmeg.

  7. Remove from heat.

  8. Mix in 3/4 cup of cheese.

  9. Place half of the sliced potatoes in a greased 1 qt. dish.

  10. Cover with half the sauce.

  11. Repeat layers.

  12. Top with remaining 1/4 cup of cheese.

  13. Cover with aluminum foil, bake for 35 minutes.

  14. Uncover and bake for 30 minutes more or until the potatoes are tender.

  15. Top with chives.

  16. Let stand for 5 minutes, enjoy!
